Hellsing OVAs

Hellsing Ultimate

Hellsing Ultimate consists of 3 movies until now. The main plot of OVA goes strictly with the manga. Producers are planning to shoot the whole story until the very end of Hellsing saga, thus means that there will ten movies in total.

OVA 1

Episode 1 of traces the mangas 1 volume. It again shows us Seras being transformed into a vampire, the introduction of the main characters, and the first fight with father Alexander Anderson. There are some minor difference from the manga (such as addition of Seras' dream scene with slightly deformed visions, and addition of Seras being welcomed by Integra, Walter, and Alucard). These differences are not as radical as the differences in the TV series. OVA series features humor similar to that of the manga, which was not absolutely absent in TV series.

I don’t need to imply that if you enjoy Hellsing saga, you need to check out the OVA series. It's pretty much a fact, that if you enjoy manga series that you'll enjoy the OVA. Fans of the TV series should get disappointed either. Though you may wonder what happened to the story you are used to, and why this one is more consistent. It is obvious that Hirano himself was inspecting the integrity of the story as it feels like you are watching a moving manga. But still some of the bits are missing, they're not major points that have any real chance of effecting the main story, but never the less you could notice their absence. Those that don't like blood and violence should pass up Hellsing.

OVA 2

Episode 2 of the OVA continue the mangas second volume. Alucard is protecting the Hellsing from the assault of the Valentine brothers. It is slightly different, the battle with Luke Valentine is extended, and there are a few short scenes of the Valentines individually slaughtering Hellsing soldiers that were not in the manga. The last 2 chapters of the manga are also absent, probably because the entire OVA is heavily action based. (Still they are seen in images during the credits) In this OVA we don’t see the introduction of Pip, and Enrico Maxwell with Anderson. The Omake which premieres in volume 2 of the manga is also absent, which means we probably won’t see it in animated form.

You can really see the amount of money and effort the studio gave to this OVA. The production cost is actually higher than the first series and may say that the cost of TV series was very high. It’s the little details that make this series stand out of crowd. The highly detailed characters without transforms, the gentle flow of Alucards minions from one form to another, and even the reflections in jewelry.

OVA 3

In OVA 3 we see the continuation of the story right after the credits of OVA 2 left us. The introduction of the Wild Geese their leader Pip, Integra's meeting with father Enrico Maxwell, Alucard and Walters conversation about Millennium, the mission to Rio de Janeiro with the butchery at Rio Hotel, and the duel between Alucard and Alhambra in the very end. The scene with Enrico interrogating the priest from Volume Four was absent and instead a scene with the Major from Volume Four was added.

The only complaint I have with OVA 3 is the drop of the standard animation. When compared this OVA to the first two. There are less action sequences seen previously and certain frames were noticeably poorly rendered. Other than that, the story was great as always.
